What Is the OESP Program?
The Ontario Electricity Support Program (OESP) is a provincial program that gives eligible households an ongoing monthly credit directly on their electricity bill. It’s designed to help lower-income customers keep up with rising hydro costs, not as a one-time rebate, but as steady month-to-month support.
As of March 1, 2024, Ontario increased the income eligibility thresholds, meaning more households now qualify and some existing participants may receive a higher monthly credit.
How Much Can You Save?
The monthly credit depends on two factors:
How many people live in your home
Your combined after-tax household income
Typical credits range from about $35–$75 per month, with higher credits ($52–$113) available for:
Households that heat with electricity
Customers using certain electricity-intensive medical devices
Indigenous customers or those living with Indigenous family members
Who Qualifies?
You may qualify if:
You are the account holder for an electricity bill (utility or unit sub-meter provider), and
Your household income and size fall within the OESP income limits.
OESP is especially relevant for:
Low- to moderate-income renters who pay hydro directly
Homeowners struggling with monthly electricity costs
Households on Ontario Works (OW) or ODSP who still pay their own hydro bill
How to Apply (Step-By-Step)

If approved, the credit is applied automatically to your bill each month—no need to re-apply until your eligibility period ends.
Why This Matters for Renters & Landlords
Tenants who pay their own hydro can significantly reduce monthly costs, freeing up budget for rent and essentials.
Landlords benefit indirectly when tenants are less likely to fall behind on rent because their utility burden is lower.
If you (or your tenants) are paying an electricity bill and money feels tight, checking OESP eligibility is one of the fastest, most impactful ways to cut monthly utility costs in Ontario.
