Leslieville and the surrounding east-end pockets (Riverside, Riverdale, Little India) offer a completely different Toronto rental experience — mostly low-rise, mostly older character buildings, closer to actual streets and less to condo towers. 1-bedrooms typically $1,900 to $2,500. Streetcars to downtown, cafés and independent shops walkable, dog-friendly, quieter evenings.
This is where I'd send a first-time Toronto renter who values quality of life over commute times, or a couple upgrading from a downtown micro-unit. I know which streetcar routes actually run reliably, which basement units flood in spring, and which independent landlords are reasonable versus which take deposits and disappear.
